Platoons need strong leadership and effective training to come out on top in combat . That ' s why small unit leaders have to train their soldiers well , using challenging and performance - based methods . Of course , they have to work within the constraints of time and resources , but they still strive to make training innovative and effective . The ultimate goal is to have platoons that are operationally proficient . The Training Management Directorate recently updated the training management guide for platoon - level training to better reflect the needs of platoon leaders . This guide provides techniques and procedures that complement the overall training framework and help achieve proficiency . It focuses on the Training Management Cycle , which is a common framework used by leaders to prepare soldiers and units for operations . The guide also emphasizes the importance of platoon - level training within the overall training structure . By prioritizing training and providing feedback , platoon leaders play a crucial role in driving the Training Management Cycle . The guide also highlights the key concepts from Field Manual 7 - 0 , such as top - down planning and nesting training between echelons . It recognizes that most training happens at the platoon level and below . The guide refines these concepts and provides techniques and procedures specifically for platoon - level training . By achieving proficiency at this level , platoons can contribute to the overall mission success of the company and battalion . The first chapter of the guide focuses on battle tasks , which are essential collective tasks at the platoon level . These tasks are crucial for the successful accomplishment of mission - essential tasks at higher echelons . Identifying these tasks involves a crosswalk from higher echelons to lower ones , with platoon battle tasks derived from company mission essential tasks . The section battle tasks come from the platoon battle tasks . The squad battle tasks come from the section battle tasks . The crew/team battle tasks come from the squad battle tasks . In the updated guide , the Conduct a Task Crosswalk section includes appendices from the previous version in the text , so there are examples readily available . Other examples include battle task scenarios , so Soldiers can see how they can apply their training . Chapter two changes the 8 - Step Training Model ( FM 7 - 0 , para 3 - 21 ) to better fit the needs of the platoon . While the 8 - Step Training Model is a good checklist to make sure all the major planning actions are done for training events , it doesn ' t give enough detail to fully plan and prepare for small unit training events . This chapter provides a more detailed set of actions and activities that leaders can follow at the platoon level: Determine what the event needs . Talk with the commander . Come up with a concept for the event . Get the commander ' s approval . Give out orders . Check everything before the event starts . Do the event ( train , evaluate , recover ) . Give feedback to the commander . Keep track of and share the results . Each of the nine steps has information specifically for the platoon level . For example , under "Develop an Event Concept" in step three of Platoon Training Event Planning , readers get more instructions on how to find training sites , come up with a training plan , or get the resources needed . Figure 2: Leaders start with what they want the training event to look like and then plan backwards to figure out what to train and how to train it , to create a training event concept . All the steps in the updated nine - point model have similar help and examples . Step nine , Record and Share Results , also tells the reader to use Army Training Network ' s ( ATN ) online training records like Digital Job Book , Small Unit Leader Tool , battle roster updates , certification records , after action review reports , and Digital Training Management System ( DTMS ) . Chapters three and four talk about planning and evaluating at the platoon level . Chapter three explains platoon training meetings and what the organization and responsibilities are . Chapter four focuses on evaluating training , especially after action reviews and training and evaluation outlines ( T&EOs ) , which are important for measuring individual and group task skills . Examples include a summary of task performance , completed T&EOs , and codes for the experts and leaders , as well as updated links to ATN . Figure 3*: Completed training and evaluation outlines are important to keep track of how well a task was done and are kept for later . They also help the platoon give feedback to the commander to see how skilled they are at battle tasks . The updated guide focuses on the platoon level and includes new features . For example , chapter one provides training examples like conducting an attack at the platoon level . Chapters three and four focus on preparation and review . Chapter five is all about lane training , which is a repeatable and efficient use of time and resources . The appendices have been integrated into the chapters for easier accessibility . Chapter six includes links to TMD ' s online training support , such as the Army Training Management System ( ATN ) , Combined Arms Training Strategies , and DTMS . These resources can help platoon leaders plan , execute , and review different modes of training . Training is super important for getting our Army ready to kick butt and come out on top . Most of the training happens in smaller groups , like platoons . Leaders need to know their stuff and be able to plan , organize , and carry out training that ' s legit and practical . The "Platoon Leader ' s Guide to Training Management" is a helpful tool for leaders to learn about managing training at their level , grow as leaders , and get really good at this crucial skill for their unit .
