☷Fort Johnson Nurses Celebrate 123 Years of Service

Bayne - Jones Army Community Hospital recently held a casual cake cutting ceremony to celebrate the 123rd anniversary of the United States Army Nurse Corps . The event took place at the Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Johnson in Louisiana . Lt . Col . Nicole Rau , the deputy commander of nursing for BJACH , organized the event to recognize the important role of nurses in healthcare and this year ' s theme of serving with distinction and compassion . Before cutting the cake , a video message from Col . James Burk , the chief of Army Nurse Corps , was presented , expressing gratitude to nurses serving in various capacities . The newest member of the BJACH nursing team , 2nd Lt . Steven McCray , shared his passion for serving in the Army Nurse Corps , highlighting the blend of expertise , empathy , and care that nurses bring to their work . Maj . Cody McDonald , the clinical nurse officer in charge of the BJACH emergency department , emphasized that the Army Nurse Corps goes beyond traditional nursing roles , requiring a higher standard of knowledge and skills . Maj . Carmen Salcedo , the commander of C Company , 710th Brigade Support Battalion , 3rd Brigade Combat Team , 10th Mountain Division , enlisted as a combat medic but desired to contribute more . “I wanted the opportunity to care for injured and sick soldiers and civilians in a hospital setting , ” she said . “I was fortunate to complete the requirements for the Army Medical Department Enlisted Commissioning program , which allowed me to complete my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and enlist in the Army Nurse Corps . ” Salcedo said it was important to mark the anniversary of the Army Nurse Corps each year . “The profession of nursing has come a long way in society and certainly in the Army , ” she said . “I think it is important to use this anniversary to reflect on how far we have come as Army Nurses and to celebrate the roles and responsibilities we hold within the Army . ” Salcedo said she is proud of it , being an officer in the Army Nurse Corps . “All of my experiences have allowed me to become even more passionate about caring for people , ” she said . McDonald reiterated her sentiments . “The Army Nurse Corps has grown into so much more than just nursing , and we offer diversity and experience in every position we hold , ” he said . “Nurses command organizations , lead soldiers on the battlefield and sacrifice their lives to save others , ” he said . “It is important to remember those who paved the way for us . ” Rau said this year ' s theme underscores her commitment to high standards with a focus on helping and healing patients . “As nurses , we bring a mix of expertise , compassion and caring , ” she said . “Nurses provide treatment , provide emotional support and act as advocates for our patients . By recognizing and celebrating the Army Nurse Corps’ anniversary , we honor the nurses who play an important medical role in the care of soldiers , veterans and their families . ”
