Col . Jeffrey Barta , the commanding officer of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment , and Command Sgt . Maj . Mikeal McInroy , the command sergeant major of the regiment , gathered at Fort Cavazos , Texas on February 1 , 2024 to case the regiment ' s colors . This ceremony is an important tradition in the Army and symbolizes the unit transitioning from a garrison to a deployed setting . Maj . Gen . Kevin Admiral , the commanding general of the 1st Cavalry Division , and Col . Jeffery Barta also stood in attention during the ceremony . It is customary for a unit to hold an uncasing ceremony once it arrives at its designated mission area . The 3rd Cavalry Regiment Troopers also aligned during the casing colors ceremony to showcase the regiment ' s history . The 1st Cavalry Division Band provided musical accompaniment during the ceremony . The "Brave Rifles" of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment , 1st Cavalry Division , held the casing of colors ceremony in preparation for their upcoming deployment to the Republic of Korea . They will be replacing the 2nd Brigade Combat Team , 4th Infantry Division , from Fort Carson , Colorado . This deployment supports the United States ' commitment to deter aggression and strengthen its alliance with the Republic of Korea . Col . Jeffrey Barta emphasized the bravery and teamwork of the "Brave Rifle Troopers" and their mission to deter aggression and be ready to fight if necessary . This marks the first deployment of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment to the Korean peninsula , and it is also the first time Col . Barta and Command Sgt . Maj . McInroy have been deployed there in their careers . “We added a new phrase to our vocabulary , borrowed from the Korean language , ” Barta noted , “katchi kapshida , ” which means “we walk together . ” Approximately 4 , 000 soldiers and approximately 1 , 500 pieces of equipment will travel halfway around the globe and take part in joint and multinational exercises . These exercises will maintain the strength of the U . S . - ROK alliance . “In the Indo - Pacific region , North Korea continues to threaten our allies and partners , ” said Maj . Gen . Kevin D . Admiral , commander of the 1st Cavalry Division . “It is now more important than ever that we reassure our allies in the region . ” The 1st Cavalry Division provides a scalable , combat - ready force up to the level of an expeditionary division or joint task force headquarters , capable of conducting unified ground operations anywhere in the world at short notice to meet diverse and changing mission requirements .
