Staff Sgt . Stephan Strick and Staff Sgt . Valdo Debarros from the 28th Military Police Detachment and 549th Military Working Dog Detachment recently visited Two Rivers School to show students how dog toys can be used for training . Military working dogs like Aramis and Ddena demonstrated their skills , with Aramis eagerly waiting for commands and Ddena showing off her strong grip on Spc . Frank Pawlowicz . Sgt . 1st Class Justin Kruger also showed off a "bite sleeve" used in training . The school , located in Two Rivers , Alaska , has a high percentage of military - connected students and is known for its dog mushing community . The visit was well received , with many students and teachers raising their hands to show they have dogs at home . Sandra Wolfe , a classroom aide , mentioned that the visit helped students see a different side of dogs and that she was glad to have the soldiers and dogs back at the school after her husband ' s retirement from active duty at Fort Wainwright . After Strick finished talking to the students about what the dogs are trained to do and showing them some of the equipment they use , Sgt . 1st Class Justin Kruger , the unit’s kennel master , gave a quick safety talk and asked for two volunteers . Almost everyone raised their hand to volunteer . The volunteers were tasked with hiding some scented training aids for the first demonstration . MWD Aramis , a German shepherd trained in explosives detection , found the training aids with loud applause from the students . The students were most excited about the bite work demonstrated by MWD Ddena and two soldiers . The students enjoyed the visit a lot , and the dogs benefit from being around children . The unit conducts about three to four demonstrations in the community each year to strengthen the relationship between the community and the military .
