☷Philadelphia Man Pleads Guilty to Murder in a Case Involving Two Carjackings of Food Delivery Drivers

One victim tragically died from injuries sustained during a carjacking in Philadelphia . Today , John Nusslein , a 19 - year - old from Philadelphia , pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit carjacking , carjacking resulting in death , and carjacking resulting in serious bodily injury . Nusslein was indicted in June 2022 for his involvement in a series of carjackings targeting food delivery drivers in Northeast Philadelphia in November and December of 2021 . According to the indictment , Nusslein and others committed two carjackings during this time period . On December 2 , 2021 , Nusslein and two others placed a fake food delivery order to lure their victim to a specific location . Upon arrival , they attacked the delivery driver and stole his 2004 Toyota Camry . Unfortunately , the victim later passed away from the injuries sustained during the carjacking . On December 16 , 2021 , Nusslein and another individual used the same tactic to rob another food delivery driver , stealing his 2015 Infiniti QX5 . U . S . Attorney Jacqueline C . Romero expressed disgust at the carjackers ' actions , emphasizing their deliberate targeting of innocent people trying to earn a living . She assured the public that violent offenders like Nusslein will be prosecuted and face lengthy prison sentences . Eric J . DeGree , Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol , Tobacco , Firearms and Explosives ' Philadelphia Field Division , also emphasized the seriousness and danger of carjacking as a federal crime . The ATF Philadelphia Field Division is working closely with the Philadelphia Carjacking Task Force and using their forensic and investigative tools to ensure justice for victims and make communities safer through federal prosecution . Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin J . Bethel expressed his concern about the tragic consequences of carjackings and commended the collaboration between law enforcement agencies in bringing the case to justice . The defendant , Nusslein , is facing a possible life sentence and will be sentenced in July 2024 . This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods ( PSN ) , a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities . The investigation was conducted by the ATF and Philadelphia Police Department and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys .
