Today , Attorney General Merrick B . Garland announced that the Justice Department is expanding its Violent Crime Initiative to three new cities: St . Louis , Missouri; Jackson , Mississippi; and Hartford , Connecticut . This initiative , which has already been successful in Houston and Memphis , aims to target gangs and violent groups that pose a threat to communities nationwide . The goal is to reduce violent crime and increase safety in these cities . This expansion comes as the Justice Department continues to work on replicating the successes seen in cities like Detroit , Baltimore , New Orleans , Philadelphia , and Chicago in reducing violent crime . FBI Director Christopher Wray emphasized the impact of violent crime on victims and communities , and the FBI ' s commitment to working with local law enforcement to address this issue . Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole M . Argentieri highlighted the urgent need to address violent crime and the collaboration between the Criminal Division and local U . S . authorities in tackling this issue . The Criminal Division has chosen St . Louis , Jackson , and Hartford as the next cities to focus on through the Violent Crime Initiative ( VCI ) .
