Today , Attorney General Merrick B . Garland announced that the Justice Department is expanding its Violent Crime Initiative to three new cities: St . Louis , Missouri; Jackson , Mississippi; and Hartford , Connecticut . This initiative , which has already been successful in Houston and Memphis , aims to target gangs and violent groups that pose a threat to communities nationwide . The goal is to reduce violent crime and increase safety in these cities . This expansion comes as the Justice Department continues to work on replicating the successes seen in cities like Detroit , Baltimore , New Orleans , Philadelphia , and Chicago in reducing violent crime . FBI Director Christopher Wray emphasized the impact of violent crime on victims and communities , and the FBI ' s commitment to working with local law enforcement to address this issue . Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole M . Argentieri highlighted the urgent need to address violent crime and the collaboration between the Criminal Division and local U . S . authorities in tackling this issue . Attorneys , law enforcement agencies , and community leaders are coming together to target the most dangerous violent offenders , engage with local communities , and make our neighborhoods safer . The Criminal Division has chosen St . Louis , Jackson , and Hartford as the next cities to focus on through the Violent Crime Initiative ( VCI ) . This initiative brings together prosecutors , investigative agents , and experts from various agencies to collaborate with community leaders and address citizens ' concerns . The results in Houston and Memphis have been promising , with reductions in violent crime and homicides . U . S . Attorneys in Missouri , Mississippi , and Connecticut are eager to work with the Justice Department to tackle violent crime in their regions . ATF Director Steven Dettelbach emphasizes the importance of continuing successful strategies to further reduce crime rates . "ATF ' s expertise in crime gun intelligence allows our agents and law enforcement partners to track crime guns . This leads to more effective arrests of the actual shooter and those who illegally provided the gun to the shooter . By combining this intelligence and data Combined with traditional techniques , ATF can generate evidence - based cases against the most dangerous offenders . We are proud to work with all of our partners on this important initiative in cities across the country . " "Drug - Related Crime and Violence Continue to have a significant impact on our communities and require new approaches , " said DEA Administrator Anne Milgram . "Two years ago , DEA implemented Operation Overdrive , a data - driven , intelligence - led approach to identify and disrupt the criminal drug networks that harm communities most , including St . Louis , Missouri; Hartford , Connecticut; and Jackson , Mississippi . This approach allows us to map threats and shift our resources so that our counternarcotics efforts can have the greatest impact on our communities . The Expanded Violent Crime Initiative further expands our efforts by leveraging state , local and The Potential of Federal Partnerships to Successfully Investigate and Prosecute Criminals .
