We took the Belvoir SRU on outings to places like the National League Baseball Game . It was great to get to know other Soldiers going through similar situations in the SRU . ~Sgt . Wang - Jun Lee Falls Church , Va . - Army Reserve Sgt . Wang Junli had a plan for his future that he knew would expand and grow over time . In my second year of college , I wanted to do something more meaningful to help change society , which is why I joined the Army Reserves . He told me: I want to serve the nation . This plan had some problems during its deployment in Kuwait . I was training and tore up my knee while getting out of the car in September 2022 . I ended up being medically damaged due to the severity of my injury at Fort Cavazos , and was then sent to the Soldier Recovery Unit at Fort Belvoir ( SRU ) for further treatment . The financial management specialist tore my left ACL and required surgery , which he performed in January of 2023 . I was on crutches for ten weeks , then underwent intense physical therapy for about six months . It took me ten months to recover . The SRU helped me with physical therapy appointments and paperwork , they also helped me with the administrative side , and are following up with the goal of helping me get back to work , and I ' m happy to say I ' m back at work! He is very grateful to the Army Recovery Care Program and how they worked with him on his recovery journey . They really helped me by having me go to the FT Belvoir SRU because it is closer to my home in Ft . Washington , Maryland , so I can have the support of my family and friends . Like many soldiers , Lee was moved to learn that his only job was to get better . I had no idea what an SRU was or what software it was . I assumed I would be on convalescence leave and would have to use Tricare and go through surgery and physical therapy on my own . I have been very fortunate to learn about this excellent program , which also helps me with my recovery from injury after injury . He told me that they always check on me to see how I am doing and if I need anything . I would have had a lot of headaches if I had to do it alone . My only focus is to get better and get back to work . I definitely would have been more nervous . Besides the medical aspect , the SRU has a lot of events to help you with your recovery . I was able to participate in an equine therapy program , something I never would have done . It definitely helps with the mental aspect of my recovery . Lee is pleased with the accommodation Fort Belvoir SRU has provided for his immediate future . I am a full - time student at Virginia Tech when I am not on reserve duty . I went back to school , and SRU worked with me to switch back and forth between school and SRU . I spend three days a week in Blacksburg working on my mechanical engineering degree , and the rest of the week I have therapy at the SRU . It ' s been great being able to heal physically and mentally while still working towards my education goals . I ' ll be graduating in May and starting a full - time job as a mechanical engineer . I want other Soldiers to know about the resources available at the SRU and to make the most of their Transition Coordinator . Mr . James Coleman has been a big help for me , encouraging me to take resume writing classes and informing me about career fairs . I even landed an internship opportunity! The atmosphere at the Fort Belvoir SRU is all about recovery and growth , not just sitting around . The relationships I ' ve built there have been invaluable in my journey back to civilian life . It ' s been inspiring to be surrounded by other Soldiers going through similar experiences , and the support from the cadre has been amazing . We ' ve all pushed each other to be better and it ' s been a really positive experience .
