☷Fort Moore names air traffic control facility honors military aviators

The leaders at Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Moore recently paid tribute to two military aviators by naming the new air traffic control facility at Lawson Army Airfield after them . Congressman Sanford D . Bishop and Columbus , Ga . , Mayor Skip Henderson unveiled the dedication sign during a ceremony honoring U . S . Air Force 2nd Lt . Eugene J . Bullard and U . S . Army Lt . Col . Bruce P . Crandall . Maj . Gen . Curtis A . Buzzard , commanding general of MCoE and Fort Moore , spoke about the significance of having Bullard and Crandall ' s names overlooking the airfield . Congressman Bishop also shared the aviators ' stories and contributions . The event included music from the MCoE band and a display showcasing LAAF ' s mission and capabilities , ending with the unveiling of the dedication sign . Bullard , the first African American military pilot to fly in combat , was honored for his bravery during World War I . Crandall , a Medal of Honor recipient , led numerous combat missions in Vietnam . He got the Medal of Honor for what he did in the Battle of la Drang , bringing ammo to the soldiers at Landing Zone X - Ray and getting the injured out of there even though the enemy was shooting at them .
