The Biden - Harris Administration just released a plan to reduce greenhouse - gas emissions from buildings . The goal is to cut emissions by 65% by 2035 and 90% by 2050 . This is part of President Biden ' s plan to lower energy costs , improve resilience , and tackle the climate crisis . The plan was developed by the U . S . Department of Energy , along with other federal agencies . It ' s the first strategy of its kind and shows the administration ' s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and achieving clean energy goals . The building sector is responsible for a significant amount of harmful emissions and this plan aims to change that . By reducing emissions , we can save money on energy costs and create healthier communities . It ' s especially important to help economically disadvantaged communities who are more likely to struggle with high energy costs and poor building conditions . The plan focuses on affordability and resilience to power outages and extreme weather events caused by climate change . To meet the emissions reduction goals for buildings , the Blueprint outlines four main objectives: improving energy efficiency , reducing onsite emissions , optimizing interactions with the electricity grid , and decreasing emissions from building materials . Each objective has specific targets to reach by 2035 and 2050 . Achieving these targets will require the rapid deployment of various decarbonization and energy efficiency technologies . The Blueprint suggests federal actions such as funding research and development , expanding markets for low - carbon technologies , providing financing , and supporting the development of emissions - reducing building codes . The DOE is focusing on building innovations in building upgrades , efficient electrification , and smart controls . The Affordable Home Energy Shot™ program aims to make home upgrades more affordable and reduce energy bills . For more information , visit the Building Technologies Office website .
