Linda Eckley , the head of quality assurance at Army Field Support Battalion - Africa in Livorno , Italy , and her team are checking out a remotely operated weapon station on a mine - resistant ambush protected vehicle at the Leghorn Army Depot Army Prepositioned Stocks - 2 worksite on April 2 . Eckley , who has been with the Army for 27 years , mostly supporting APS operations , also inspects one of the first vehicles out of the paint booth at the worksite . She has worked for APS throughout her career , with stints in various countries including Iraq , Israel , England , Norway , Korea , Japan , and at sea . Eckley , a former engineer , is currently serving as the chief of quality assurance while also performing engineer duties at AFSBn - Africa until a new engineer is hired . Her team ' s success is attributed to their comprehensive quality assurance surveillance program , which involves capturing data on every task and maintenance mission to assist with quality control . Overall , Eckley ' s experience and dedication to the APS mission have made her a valuable asset to the team . Eckley , originally from Claysburg , Pennsylvania , explained that their goal is to ensure that all maintenance and supply tasks are done correctly and in accordance with regulations . This includes tasks like equipment maintenance , storage , hazardous material management , and more . Eckley , a graduate of Penn State University with degrees in mechanical engineering and structural engineering , is updating their standards of achievement and providing guidance on how to achieve them . Luckily , they have a great staff and mechanics at their disposal . Eckley emphasized the importance of their local national workforce at the Leghorn Army Depot APS - 2 site , as it allows them to provide high - quality services at a lower cost . However , her team is dedicated to ensuring that everything leaving the worksite is of the highest quality . Some team members are currently working in Kaiserslautern , Germany , supporting a vehicle maintenance program . For DEFENDER 24 , Eckley ' s team will be involved in equipment configuration and hand - off operations . Eckley explained that they are always available to support the brigade with any quality assurance needs . Beyond her work , Eckley is passionate about animals and volunteers with a pet rescue group , helping with strays and abandoned animals . She shared a heartwarming story of saving a baby goat after a mountain fire in Italy . When she ' s not focused on APS - 2 operations and AFSBn - Africa , Eckley ' s attention is on her faith and her love for animals . In the past , she has participated in animal rescue missions in the United States . In places where hurricanes and tropical storms are common , the cat mom of four is currently volunteering with a local pet rescue group in Italy , helping out with strays and abandoned pets . She also mentioned that she ' s proud to be a Christian and relies on her prayers and faith in God . AFSBn - Africa is responsible for receiving and storing APS - 2 at Leghorn Army Depot , as well as issuing it to tactical units at forward locations . They support organizations like U . S . European Command , U . S . Africa Command , and others to enhance readiness in two theaters of operations . AFSBn - Africa is one of four battalions under the 405th Army Field Support Brigade , which is part of U . S . Army Sustainment Command and based in Germany . The brigade provides logistics support to U . S . forces in Europe and Africa , coordinating acquisition , logistics , and technology to support joint forces .
