Soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division ( LI ) in Fort Drum , New York , were busy loading tables and chairs onto a vehicle during the Command Post Exercise 1A . This exercise , taking place on March 20 , 2024 , is essential in building confidence and skills for light infantry professionals . One soldier , Spc . Thomas J . Itoney , spent the day clearing snow off a humvee in preparation for CPX 1B , the live - field portion of the exercise . This exercise allows soldiers to excel and become proficient in light infantry operations . The 10th Mountain Division ( LI ) recently participated in a two - week command post exercise , getting ready for a field exercise at Fort Johnson , Louisiana . The training included inventory checks and loadouts , followed by live operations in the field . This exercise tests the division ' s readiness for real - world situations . Staff Sgt . Juan Velez Palacio , an operations noncommissioned officer , emphasized the importance of inventory and communication in completing the mission . CPX brings different shops together to work effectively in combat operations . Soldiers also have the opportunity to develop their talents and basic skills during the exercise . After CPX 1A , the soldiers moved on to a three - day live field operation to validate their skills in simulated battlefield conditions . During the exercise , the division gets to collaborate and focus on improving systems that are already working well and identifying areas that need more practice . Major Aaron Simonsen mentioned that the exercise allows them to bring together individuals who may not usually work together and form teams to support the commander ' s goals . Soldiers participating in the exercise were able to practice their skills in large - scale combat operations . Specialist Tomas Kaiser , a radio operator , found it interesting to work with network systems and signals . Overall , the CPX training provided Soldiers with valuable experience and knowledge for future missions . Kaiser expressed excitement about the training , mentioning that he is enjoying learning new things and working with different people and equipment .
