New energy efficiency standards for residential cooking products have been finalized by the U . S . Department of Energy ( DOE ) . These standards , which were recommended by stove and oven manufacturers and supported by various stakeholders , are expected to lower utility bills by $1 . 6 billion over 30 years . The standards will take effect in 2028 and aim to improve appliance reliability and performance while reducing household costs . This announcement aligns with President Biden ' s commitment to lower expenses for American families and promote energy efficiency . The DOE will continue to work with industry partners and stakeholders to strengthen appliance standards and ensure consumer savings . The adopted efficiency standards for residential cooking products include electric and gas cooktops , oven ranges , and standalone cooktops and ovens . These standards will not result in the removal of any desired features in future models . Additionally , the standards are projected to decrease carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 4 million metric tons over 30 years . Most models already meet these efficiency standards , with only a small portion requiring minor improvements . Starting from January 31 , 2028 , all newly manufactured models , including imports , will need to comply with energy efficiency standards . The Biden - Harris Administration expects these standards to save American families and businesses almost $1 trillion over the next 30 years . Additionally , the Department of Energy estimates that these standards will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2 . 5 billion metric tons , which is equivalent to the emissions of 18 million gas - powered cars , 22 coal - fired power plants , or 10 . 5 million homes over a 30 - year period .
