Winter is here and it hit Redstone Arsenal hard . The winter storm covered Huntsville and Redstone Arsenal in ice , snow , and freezing temperatures , making the sidewalks , roads , and bridges extremely slippery . Because of the dangerous conditions , Redstone Arsenal had to close from Jan . 15 - 18 . Many people at Redstone are used to harsh winter weather since they might have been stationed in places with even colder climates than North Alabama . For some , the first snow of the season brings thoughts of cozy weekends by the fire and enjoying meals with loved ones . However , it ' s important to remember that there are health and safety risks that come with winter weather , as pointed out by Charlie Carter , the Garrison ' s safety director . The National Weather Service suggests that you prepare before the storm hits by stocking up on supplies for your home , office , and vehicles . Don ' t forget to make sure your farm animals and pets have what they need during a winter storm . It ' s also a good idea to have a snow shovel and rock salt on hand , as we should always be ready for the next winter storm in the Tennessee Valley . If the storm brings snow , the Garrison Safety Office recommends the following steps to prepare: · Warm up your body by doing some stretching exercises before you go out to shovel snow . This can help prevent injuries . · Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from the extremely cold air when you ' re outside . · Be cautious with physical exertion since cold weather can strain the heart . Take breaks and stay hydrated to avoid dehydration . · Change out of wet clothes frequently to avoid losing body heat . Wet clothing doesn ' t insulate and transmits heat quickly . · Be careful when walking on snowy or icy surfaces . · Use proper form when shoveling or lifting , using your knees instead of your back . · Push snow instead of throwing it to avoid twisting and getting hurt . When winter weather hits North Alabama , make sure to check with the National Weather Service or local officials for road closures before driving . If you have to drive , remember to slow down and follow the recommendations from the Safety Office . · Whenever possible , try to avoid driving . If you need to go out , try not to travel alone . But if you do , make sure to tell someone where you ' re going , the route you ' re taking , and when you expect to arrive . Dress warmly and wear loose - fitting , lightweight clothes in layers . Stay updated on road conditions by listening to the radio or calling the state highway patrol . Use main streets or highways whenever possible , as they will be cleared first . Drive slowly because it takes longer to stop on snow and ice . Four - wheel drive vehicles may help on snowy roads , but they don ' t stop faster than other vehicles . If you skid , steer in the direction you want to go and straighten the wheel when the car starts moving that way . Keep your gas tank as full as you can . Snow can be a hassle , but with some planning , the right equipment , and a smart approach , we can deal with it in north Alabama and southern Tennessee .
