U . S . Army civilian employees recently celebrated the graduation of the class of 2024 from Fort Buchanan ' s mentoring program . The ceremony took place at the community center on January 26th and included ten participants . The program aims to develop the skills and professionalism of civilian employees , according to Fort Buchanan commander Col . Charles N . Moulton . It connects experienced employees with those who are less experienced , providing training in areas like communication , critical thinking , teamwork , and leadership . Carmen Dieppa , the program coordinator , believes this initiative creates opportunities for employees to excel and benefit both themselves and the organization . One employee , Jose Martinez Bonano , who works at the Children and Youth Service Center , never expected to be involved in the military but through the program , he was able to practice architecture , a field he had studied . Martinez Bonano believes the program expands the horizons of Army civilian employees and allows them to pursue their passions and goals . Gustavo Villaronga , an architect at Fort Buchanan , served as Martinez Bonano ' s mentor . As a mentor , what I love most is seeing our coworkers ' potential in different areas , getting to know them better , and helping them realize there is a bright future ahead . But hey , even though I ' m a mentor , I also learn a lot from this whole experience . This program is awesome because it helps the Fort Buchanan workforce grow both professionally and personally , according to Villaronga . The mentees who graduated from the mentorship program are Jose Martinez Bonano , Edgardo Marrero , Laura Bauza , Idalis Rios , Sigfredo Perez , Eddie Toro , Samuel K . Turner , Carlos Montañez , Yaviel Luna , and Elizabeth Jusino . And let ' s not forget the mentors: Magda E . Figueroa , Rosa Rodriguez , Wilda Diaz , Hector Rivera , Maria Nuñez , Angel Moya , Russell Lorenzo , Ruth E . Gonzalez , Gustavo Villaronga , and Anibal Negron . By the way , Fort Buchanan has more than 500 employees . They just announced that they ' ll be hiring civilian personnel this year , and they ' re encouraging people on the island to apply at www . usajobs . gov . Fun fact: since 1776 , the Army has been hiring civilians to work alongside soldiers , covering over 500 different job fields . Fort Buchanan is like the Army ' s Caribbean hub , providing support and a good quality of life for around 15 , 000 military members and their families . This includes active - duty Reserve , National Guard , Marine Corps Reserve , and Navy Operational Support Center members .
