The trade relationship between the two countries is strong and supports job creation in both nations . On a personal level , Austria is part of the Fulbright educational exchange program , giving opportunities to thousands of Austrians to participate in U . S . - funded exchange programs . There are also exchange programs between military academies and technical schools in both countries . In 2023 , the U . S . and Austria recommitted to working together through the U . S . played a key role in helping Austria get back on its feet and in declaring it as a free , independent , and neutral state through the Austrian State Treaty . Austria and the United States are part of several of the same international organizations . While Austria is not a member of NATO , it participates in their Partnership for Peace program and has military personnel involved in peacekeeping operations worldwide . Additionally , Austria supports Ukraine by providing humanitarian aid and collaborating with the EU on sanctions against Russia . Austria has also made efforts to address restitution and compensation for Nazi victims and is committed to providing over $1 billion in restitution .
