U . S . Army Lt . Col . Sheila Johnson has built a successful career by focusing on the little things . Originally from Alaska and raised in Florida , she has spent 17 years in the Army after earning her doctorate in microbiology and immunology from the University of Florida . She has served in various locations such as Illinois , Maryland , Washington , and Kenya . Johnson attributes her success as an Army officer and product developer at Fort Detrick , Md . , to her 12 - year - old son and a strong support system of family and friends . Born into a military family in Alaska and raised in Florida , Johnson now works as a product manager at Fort Detrick . After completing her studies at Florida State University and the University of Florida , she commissioned in 2007 to pursue her passion as a microbiologist . Johnson ' s military background and support system have been crucial to her success . She has served in various locations and currently manages projects at USAMMDA . Johnson ' s leadership skills have grown with her career , and she aims to lead by example and share her experiences with others . “The Army offers many advantages: educational opportunities to earn degrees and certificates; the opportunity to learn new skills in leadership , communication , and conflict resolution; and the ability to make a positive impact and contribute to a greater purpose . Johnson ' s resume is full of distinguished titles and prestigious awards . She was appointed a member of the Military Medical Merit Legion last year for her contributions to the work of the Army Medical Department - yet she has spent most of her career in hands - on lab work , which is not unusual for a biologist Microscopy . In research . Joining USAMMDA broadened Johnson ' s academic scope and helped prepare her for a more impactful career in medical development . “Before I came to USAMMDA , I knew very little about [medical development]; “I was only aware of the science and technology side of things , ” Johnson said . “I have a few smart friends in the acquisitions industry who told me how great it was and convinced me to apply for the position . I ' ve loved every minute of it since then and can ' t imagine doing anything else!” I love knowing I ' m making a difference and doing something important . Medical product development is unique; I contribute to advances in healthcare that directly impact , and often save , people ' s lives . It ' s definitely not easy; This position is challenging and requires problem solving which continually pushes me to grow and develop as a professional .
