Five years ago today , a terrible tragedy occurred when a gunman attacked worshippers at two mosques in Christchurch , New Zealand , resulting in the loss of 51 lives and injuring 40 others . Today , on the International Day to Combat Islamophobia , we remember those who were taken from us and stand in solidarity with Muslim communities facing discrimination and violence . It is important to create a world where people of all faiths can live without fear , including in the United States where Islamophobia is unfortunately still prevalent . We must all work together to combat hate and discrimination , protect places of worship , and ensure the safety and equality of all individuals . Our Administration is dedicated to implementing strategies to counter Islamophobia and other forms of bias , and we will continue to fight for a more inclusive and just society where everyone is treated equally . Our thoughts are with Muslims observing Ramadan , and we remain committed to ending the harmful effects of Islamophobia both domestically and globally .
