After almost thirteen years of being independent , South Sudan is still struggling with insecurity and poverty . The leaders of the country haven ' t shown enough determination to create a stable and peaceful environment for the people . They haven ' t made any effort to ensure free and fair elections in December 2024 . All parties are responsible for this failure and for the rich getting richer while the rest suffer . Corruption is widespread and only adds to the conflict , which goes against what the people of South Sudan wanted when they became a nation . The United States is committed to supporting the South Sudanese people ' s desire for peace , democracy , human rights , and a government that works for everyone . That ' s why we are imposing visa restrictions on certain individuals in South Sudan who are involved in corruption that fuels conflict . These restrictions don ' t target the South Sudanese people or the government . They are meant to show our support for South Sudan ' s fight against corruption , and our desire to see democracy and the rule of law thrive .
