Today , the U . S . Department of Health and Human Services ( HHS ) announced a new rule that will make things easier for Tribal child support programs . This rule aligns with President Biden ' s recent executive order on supporting Tribal Nations and aims to give more support to Tribal governments . It cuts through bureaucracy and makes federal funding more accessible , allowing Tribes to boost their economies and provide important services to their citizens . HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra stated that these changes will reduce costs and barriers for Tribes , honoring their sovereignty and trust relationship with the federal government . ACF Acting Assistant Secretary Jeff Hild emphasized that the rule respects Tribal history , values , and cultures , making it easier for Tribes to serve their children and families . This change is particularly significant as Tribal governments have fewer revenue options compared to state governments . By eliminating the cost - sharing requirement , Tribes will have an easier time operating their own child support programs and supporting their communities . In fact , Tribal child support programs have already shown success , collecting $51 million in child support payments in FY 2022 . Commissioner Tanguler Gray from ACF Office of Child Support Services expressed gratitude for the valuable insights gained from Tribal communities and their dedicated leaders and staff . We ' ve listened to their feedback and are working to make it easier for Tribal child support programs to access funding and improve outcomes for children and families . This rule also promotes equity and respects Tribal sovereignty . Our goal is to support Tribal Nations in achieving self - determination and improving social and economic development . Commissioner Patrice H . Kunesh is proud of our Tribal partnerships and the positive impact of this rule .
