Lt . Col . Andrew Wagner is about to take on a new role as the U . S . property and fiscal officer for Nevada , replacing Col . Mary Devine . Wagner will be responsible for managing nearly $1 billion in federal assets for the Nevada Army and Air Guard , as well as overseeing the annual federal funds of around $200 million for payroll and operations . Despite the daunting responsibility , Wagner feels confident in his ability to continue serving the Nevada Guard and ensuring mission success . He has been preparing for this role as Devine ' s deputy USPFO and will soon be promoted to colonel . Devine has faith in Wagner ' s abilities and believes he has the right mindset for the job . Wagner will be part of the National Guard Bureau and will wear the NGB branch insignia . His superiors include Lt . Gen . Marc Sasseville , Gov . Joe Lombardo , and Maj . Gen . Ondra Berry . Wagner ' s military career initially focused on armored vehicles and plant life , but he eventually found his way into aviation . He started his military journey as an Army private and later became an armor officer . He served as an executive officer for an Ohio Guard cavalry unit during its deployment to Kosovo and eventually moved to Nevada for his civilian job . He was supposed to transfer to a public affairs officer position in the Nevada Army Guard , but a chance meeting with retired Army officer Col . Robert Harrington changed his career path . While waiting for a medical examination , Col . Harrington noticed the book he was reading , ' Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance , ' and they started talking . Col . Harrington encouraged him to apply to become a pilot , and soon he found himself flying helicopters for C Company , 1 - 168th Aviation . During a deployment to Afghanistan , his unit medically evacuated over 1 , 000 people . After that deployment , he met his wife and they had two children . He later returned to Afghanistan as the commander of his unit , completing another successful deployment . Since then , he has worked as the commander of the Army Aviation Support Facility in Reno and earned advanced degrees . Now , as the USPFO officer , he will focus on finance and accounting , but he will miss flying specific missions . However , he is excited to serve the Nevada National Guard by ensuring timely expenditures for payroll , training , and equipment .
