In this photo , you can see Calvin Walton , Jarred Martin , Jared Sutton , Frank Compton , and Eric Smith standing next to an emergency vehicle at the Fort Novosel Fire Department on Jan . 19 , 2024 . The Fort Novosel Fire Department teamed up with the Elba Fire Department through a mutual aid agreement to help with a brush fire in New Brockton , Ala . on Jan . 2 , 2024 . Both fire department ' s vehicles were parked at the scene while assisting with the brush fire . The Fort Novosel Fire Department has mutual aid agreements with over 40 nearby fire departments , allowing them to help out in the Wiregrass area and vice versa . According to Fire Chief Jeremy Evett , Fort Novosel has 21 fire stations with resources that can be used when needed . Evett said , "We have good relationships so far and if we can , we will definitely support the local departments . " On Jan . 2 , 2024 , they responded to a mutual aid request from the Elba Fire Department for a brush fire in New Brockton . They sent their brush truck and a Rapid Intervention Vehicle to provide water and manpower . This was one of two recent calls they participated in , as calls can be sporadic and sometimes months apart . However , there are challenges when working with different departments . Evett explained , "If a department needs a pumper and personnel , we will send a pumper and one officer to serve as the liaison . The frequency of radios is different between stations , so my officer will be at the command post to relay information to my team . " Evett mentioned that mutual aid agreements have been in place for decades and they need to be renewed every 5 years , requiring approval from each agency involved . Despite the challenges , mutual aid has proven to be beneficial for both the Fort Novosel Fire Department and the local departments . The Wiregrass communities are a big deal for the service members and their families on Fort Novosel . These bonds of service are even stronger than the wiregrass that gives this region its name .
