☷Announcement of the 2024 Cohort of U S Science Envoys United States Department of State

The U . S . Department of State has picked four top - notch scientists to be the new U . S . Science Envoys in 2024: Dr . Rumman Chowdhury , Dr . Stephanie “Steffi” Diem , Dr . Sian Proctor , and Dr . Dawn Wright . These scientists will use their expertise and connections to promote international cooperation and tackle global challenges , showcasing America’s scientific leadership . This year marks the first all - female cohort in the program ' s history . The Science Envoy program was established in 2010 and the 2024 cohort will engage with civil society and government officials worldwide to promote science and technology cooperation . The Department chose these scientists for their knowledge in key areas like Artificial Intelligence , Fusion Energy , Civil Use of Space , and Ocean Sustainability . Dr . Rumman Chowdhury is a data scientist and social scientist , known for her work in AI ethics . Dr . Stephanie “Steffi” Diem is an Assistant Professor focusing on fusion energy development at UW - Madison . She ' s part of the New Voices group at NASEM and spoke at the White House Summit on Fusion Energy . Before coming to UW - Madison , she worked at Oak Ridge National Lab and General Atomics . She got her degrees from UW - Madison and Princeton . Dr . Sian Proctor teaches Geoscience at Maricopa Community Colleges , does Afrofuturism art , and is an Astronaut . She flew on the SpaceX Inspiration4 mission in 2021 . She ' s the first female commercial spaceship pilot and the only African American woman to be a mission pilot . She ' s on the National Space Council Users’ Advisory Group and promotes "Space2inspire . " She got her degrees from Arizona State University . Dr . Dawn Wright is a geographer and oceanographer , Chief Scientist at Esri , and teaches at Oregon State University . She ' s known for mapping the ocean floor worldwide . She ' s also focused on encouraging minority and female students to pursue careers in science . She ' s a member of prestigious scientific academies and holds degrees from UC Santa Barbara , Wheaton College , and Texas A&M . She made history by diving in Alvin and Challenger Deep . The Science Envoy Program is also keeping the work going with three members from the 2023 Cohort: Dr . Jessica Gephart from the University of Washington , Dr . Prineha Narang from the University of California , Los Angeles , and Dr . Kyle Whyte from the University of Michigan . These Science Envoys will keep up their awesome collaboration in the areas of: illegal , unregulated , and unreported fishing; quantum information science and technology; and the connection between environmental science and Indigenous knowledge .
