Three Vermont National Guard Soldiers , Sgt . Deedra Irwin , Spc . Sean Doherty , and Pfc . Maxime Germaine , recently competed in the International Biathlon Union World Cup held in the United States . This was a rare opportunity for American biathletes to compete against athletes from around the world on home soil . Doherty noted the increase in home crowd support compared to previous races and was proud of the team ' s historic performance in the Men ' s 4x7 . 5km Relay . Irwin enjoyed competing in front of her family for the first time , while Germaine celebrated his first pursuit of the season . Overall , their efforts added to the rich history of military involvement in biathlon . “It was really great to represent the country with such a result in the relay , but it also means a lot to represent the Guard and all the support they have given me over the years , ” Doherty said . “It allowed me to continue playing the sport as a professional . ” General Gregory Knight , Vermont ' s adjutant general , attended the race and said he was very proud of the biathletes . “What they do there is incredible; The preparation and determination to compete at this stage is amazing and they truly deserve this chance to represent their country in front of their home crowd , ” Knight said . These races and results on "home snow" support the efforts of the National Guard biathlon program and generate excitement for the future . “I think this already shows that we have a lot of athletes who are considering the military route into biathlon as they try to figure out their next step in their skiing career , ” Irwin said . “A lot of people have asked questions and wondered how the Guard works , and I can say 100% that I would not have gone to the Olympics or become the biathlete I am today without the National Guard and the Army . ” .
