The Department of Labor just announced the results of inspections done in February 2024 at 13 mines with a history of safety violations . The inspections found 58 significant violations and 2 unwarrantable failures . These inspections are part of ongoing efforts to ensure miner safety following a tragic incident in 2010 . The Mine Safety and Health Administration has been conducting these inspections since 2023 , identifying thousands of violations . The inspections target mines with poor compliance records and previous incidents . Assistant Secretary Chris Williamson emphasized the importance of these inspections in protecting miners and holding operators accountable . One of the mines inspected in February was Gentry Mine #3 in Utah , where inspectors found several serious violations , including equipment maintenance issues that could have led to fire hazards . Inspectors found some issues with the fire deluge locations and coal accumulation on the belt drive . They also noticed some problems with supporting the roof and ribs , as well as loose rib conditions and a damaged roof bolting machine . These issues could lead to serious injuries for miners . MSHA is reminding operators to conduct thorough exams to ensure safety . Other violations included not recording methane measurements and failing to block mobile equipment . Safeguards are in place to minimize hazards underground . Learn more about MSHA .
