☷Thibodaux Man Indicted for Aggravated Identity Theft Providing False Statement to a Firearms Dealer and Providing False Statement to a Federal Agency

U . S . Attorney Duane A . Evans announced that on March 22 , 2024 , a federal grand jury indicted Brett Gabriel , a 31 - year - old from Thibodaux , Louisiana . He is facing charges of aggravated identity theft , providing false statements to obtain a firearm , and providing false statements to a U . S . agency . According to court documents , Gabriel used stolen identity information to buy a gun and fraudulently received paycheck protection program loan funds from the government . If convicted , he could face up to ten years in prison and/or a fine of $250 , 000 for the firearm offense , and up to five years in prison and/or a fine of $250 , 000 for the false statement offense . Gabriel may also have to pay a special assessment fee of $100 . Additionally , he could face a mandatory minimum sentence of two years for the aggravated identity offense . U . S . Attorney Evans emphasized that the indictment is only an accusation and the defendant ' s guilt must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt . This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods ( PSN ) , a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities .
