Hey , so the U . S . Department of Housing and Urban Development ( HUD ) just announced that they ' re charging the Grapevine Housing Authority , their Executive Director Jane Everett , and Vice - Chair Bonnie McHugh with discriminating against a disabled tenant and not providing proper accommodation . Demetria L . McCain from HUD said that a person ' s disability shouldn ' t get in the way of them having safe and affordable housing . The Fair Housing Act actually prohibits discrimination based on disability and requires housing providers to make reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities . In this case , the Grapevine Housing Authority and the two individuals terminated the lease of a tenant with diabetes after a medical episode caused by his blood sugar levels . They also denied his request for accommodation , even though his doctor provided evidence that his symptoms were under control . HUD is taking this charge seriously and is committed to getting rid of housing discrimination . A judge will hear the case and if discrimination is proven , the complainant may receive damages and the judge can order other remedies to prevent further discrimination . If you think you ' re a victim of housing discrimination , you can contact HUD or file a complaint online . And housing providers can find more information on their responsibility to provide accommodations for people with disabilities on the HUD website .
