Over the past year , there has been a lot of buzz around generative Artificial Intelligence ( GenAI ) and how it can change the way we work , learn , play , and access information . In response to this , the Commerce Data Governance Board has launched the AI and Open Government Data Assets Working Group . This group aims to develop guidelines for publishing Commerce data that can be used by emerging AI technologies like GenAI . However , the working group is also aware of the risks associated with AI systems providing incorrect or false results . For example , when users ask AI models about the demographics of a specific place , they might receive inaccurate information or be directed to the wrong sources . To address this , the working group aims to make Commerce ' s public data AI - ready . This means ensuring that the data is not only readable by machines but also easily understandable . By enriching the data with relevant information and organizing it in standard formats , AI models can better interpret and provide accurate results from reliable sources . Adopting AI - ready standards will also improve the search functionality of Commerce data . By publishing AI - ready data , applications like Data Commons , Bard , or ChatGPT can provide accurate information when users inquire about the demographics of specific places . The working group will develop technical guidelines for publishing AI - ready open data and will collaborate with industry , academia , and other partners in the public data ecosystem . The working group is particularly interested in how GenAI can help the Department of Commerce achieve its goal of expanding opportunity and discovery through data . Innovations like Google ' s Data Commons and OpenAI ' s ChatGPT have shown that GenAI can empower users to easily access and analyze public data without needing specialized knowledge . By having simple conversations with AI models , users can obtain valuable insights on various topics like demographics , economics , and the climate . The goal is to make our data more accessible to a wider range of users . This group , led by Sallie Ann Keller , who is the Chief Scientist at Census , includes data management and AI experts from all thirteen bureaus within Commerce . They aim to release the guidelines by the end of 2024 . The AI and Open Government Data Assets Working Group , along with the Department of Commerce , are dedicated to improving data sharing practices to cater to our users ' needs . We are excited about the possibilities of generative AI to make data more accessible , allowing all Americans to explore and gain valuable insights .
