In Miami , Rodney Leroy Brown , a 36 - year - old from Pompano Beach , was given a hefty sentence by Judge K . Michael Moore . He will spend 324 months in federal prison , followed by three years of supervised release . This comes after being found guilty by a trial jury of committing Hobbs Act robbery and wielding a firearm during a violent crime . The incident took place on March 18 , 2023 , around 8:30 a . m . Brown , who had a history of felony convictions for burglary , possession of a firearm as a convicted felon , and grand theft , entered a convenience store in Pompano Beach . He casually grabbed a soda bottle from the cooler and then discreetly moved behind the counter where the store clerk and their 5 - year - old son were . With both firearms in hand , Brown threatened to harm the clerk and child if they didn ' t hand over the money from the registers . Fearing for their lives , the clerk complied , and Brown swiftly grabbed the cash before snatching the clerk ' s purse and making his escape . U . S . Attorney Markenzy Lapointe for the Southern District of Florida and Special Agent in Charge Christopher A . Robinson of the Bureau of Alcohol , Tobacco , Firearms and Explosives ( ATF ) , Miami Field Division , jointly announced the sentence . The ATF Miami Field Division led the investigation , with assistance from the Broward Sheriff ' s Office ( BSO ) . Assistant U . S . Attorneys Ajay J . Alexander and Catherine Koontz handled the prosecution of the case .
