A mom and her son got sent to prison for being involved in a fentanyl trafficking scheme in St . Louis . Last week , Frederick Mopkins , 32 , got a 10 - year prison sentence after pleading guilty to four charges , including fentanyl conspiracy and possessing a firearm as a felon . Vera Mopkins , 46 , got sentenced to 33 months in prison after admitting to a fentanyl conspiracy charge . Both of them had been trafficking fentanyl since 2020 . The investigation started in February that year when the FBI and St . Louis County Police Department started buying fentanyl from Frederick Mopkins and others at a hotel in Hazelwood . When they searched the hotel rooms in October , they found meth , pill presses , scales , and empty pill capsules . Some of the rooms were registered under Vera Mopkins ' name . On the same day , they also searched a house in St . Louis connected to Frederick Mopkins and found him with guns , fentanyl , cash , cell phones used for drug deals , and a large magazine for a firearm . Vera Mopkins helped coordinate some of the drug sales and even helped prepare and package fentanyl at one point . The drug sales continued in St . Louis even after the hotel search .
