☷US Engineers Scientists Continue Work with Mekong Partners on Water Security

Representatives from the Mekong River Commission and the U . S . Army Corps of Engineers Pacific Ocean Division got together for a briefing at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena , California on August 15 , 2023 . They are part of the Sister Rivers partnership , which organizes annual exchanges to help the Mekong countries manage their natural resources , share water data , reduce disaster risk , and improve water management skills . The group also took a group photo at the Castaic Pumped Storage Plant in southern California . Representatives from the State Department were also present at the briefing . The Sister Rivers Exchange , which will take place in Thailand and Vietnam from January 22 to 26 , 2024 , aims to address the challenges posed by climate change on water resources . Experts , policymakers , and stakeholders from the Mekong region and the United States will come together to find solutions and share best practices . The exchange is sponsored by the U . S . State Department and the U . S . Army Corps of Engineers , and representatives from the Mekong River Commission , Mississippi River Commission , U . S . Agency for International Development , and USACE Pacific Ocean Division will be attending . This year ' s exchange will be led by Dr . Anoulak Kittikhoun , the CEO of the Mekong River Commission Secretariat , along with representatives from Cambodia , Lao PDR , Thailand , and Vietnam . Last year ' s exchange was held in southern California . The Sister Rivers Partnership Exchange is a great example of global cooperation . As we gather in Thailand and Vietnam , we understand how important it is for us to work together to protect our water resources for the future , says Kittikhoun . Thailand and Vietnam both have a rich history with water , especially the Mekong River . This weeklong event will take place along the river , which is one of the most diverse freshwater habitats in the world , and will focus on the cultural , environmental , and economic significance of the Mekong .
