The DOE announced $750 million for 52 projects in 24 states to accelerate advancements in clean hydrogen technology , reduce costs , and support regional hydrogen centers , as part of President Biden ' s Investing in America agenda . These projects will help create over 1 , 500 new jobs and strengthen the US leadership in the clean hydrogen industry . The focus is on advancing electrolysis technologies and improving manufacturing and recycling capabilities , with the goal of producing enough clean hydrogen to power a significant portion of medium and heavy - duty trucks . This initiative is part of the Biden administration ' s efforts to address climate change , create well - paying jobs , and enhance US industrial competitiveness . The announcement was made at Macomb Community College in Michigan , highlighting the importance of clean hydrogen in driving economic growth and job creation across the country . Connecticut is a global leader in clean energy and hydrogen sectors , and smart investments will ensure it continues to be , said US Representative Rosa DeLauro ( CT - 03 ) , a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee . I ' m proud to have helped pass the Employment and Infrastructure Investment Act , which provides these funds . These funds will support and create well - paying jobs in a greener economy while combating the climate crisis and reducing emissions . This investment will create hundreds of well - paying jobs , bring millions of dollars to our local economy , and keep Michigan at the forefront of clean energy innovation and technology , said US Representative Debbie Dingell ( MI - 06 ) . Hydrogen is one of the most promising technologies in transitioning to a clean energy future , and it will support industries that have long been crucial to our state , from mobility to manufacturing . I ' m proud to have Nel Hydrogen here in Plymouth Township , and I will continue to work to ensure that Michigan leads the way in fighting climate change and achieving a net - zero economy . Along with Clean Hydrogen Regional Hubs ( H2Hubs ) , President ' s Inflation Reduction Act tax incentives , and the Department of Energy ' s Hydrogen Program research , development , and demonstration , these investments will help the DOE achieve its ambitious Hydrogen Shot™ goal of reducing the cost of clean hydrogen production to $1 per kilogram . Unlocking the full potential of clean hydrogenClean hydrogen is poised to play a vital role in reducing emissions from our most energy - intensive and polluting sectors . These sectors include key economic engines that are essential to the modern US economy and quality of life , such as heavy transport and industrial and chemical processes like steelmaking and fertilizer production . Clean hydrogen can also support the expansion of clean electricity by providing a means for long - duration energy storage and offering flexibility and multiple revenue streams for all types of clean energy generation , including renewables , advanced nuclear energy , and other innovative technologies . By allowing the development of various clean energy pathways in different sectors of the economy , the hydrogen development will strengthen America ' s energy independence and boost the manufacturing industry . This industry has already created over 800 , 000 jobs since President Biden took office . These projects , managed by the Department of Energy ' s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office ( HFTO ) , are the initial phase of implementing provisions from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act . This act authorizes $1 trillion for research , development , demonstration , and deployment activities aimed at reducing the cost of clean hydrogen production through electrolysis , as well as $500 million for research , development , and demonstration of improved processes and technologies for manufacturing and recycling clean hydrogen systems and materials . The selected projects will advance clean hydrogen technologies in various areas , such as low - cost and high - performance electrolyzer manufacturing , electrolyzer components and supply chain development , advanced technology and component development , and advanced manufacturing of fuel cell assemblies and stacks . Furthermore , by pushing for cost reductions in electrolyzers and fuel cells , these projects will improve the business case for using clean hydrogen in heavy transportation , industrial applications , and as a means of energy storage . This can help mitigate the impact of supply and demand fluctuations and alleviate pressure on the power grid . The projects announced today will also support the long - term viability of Clean Hydrogen Regional Centers and other emerging commercial - scale deployments , addressing the technical barriers to cost reduction that cannot be overcome by scale alone . With these and other significant investments in emerging hydrogen technologies , the Biden - Harris Administration is ensuring that the United States maintains global leadership in the clean hydrogen industry for decades to come , guaranteeing that American companies have access to the best , most cost - effective , and high - performing technologies . Achieving cost reduction goals will open up new markets for clean hydrogen , creating more clean energy jobs , reducing greenhouse gas emissions and harmful air pollution across various sectors of the economy , and strengthening America ' s long - term competitiveness in the global clean energy market . The Biden - Harris Administration is committed to ensuring that the benefits of the transition to clean energy reach disadvantaged communities . As part of President Biden ' s Justice40 Initiative , the projects announced today are expected to support workforce development , energy equity , and diversity , equity , inclusion , and accessibility initiatives in disadvantaged communities . The more than $35 million in funding will help project teams develop and implement community benefit plans , including supporting nine vocational certification programs to provide training in automation and manufacturing , partnering with nine minority - serving institutions as subrecipients in RD&D and analysis work , and engaging with over 40 community partners to facilitate community - focused activities such as community advisory boards , local transportation improvements , and local impact analysis . Additionally , by reducing costs and accelerating the adoption of clean hydrogen , these projects ultimately aim to reduce harmful emissions , which will be particularly beneficial for disadvantaged communities burdened by pollution . The selection for the award negotiations is not a guarantee that the DOE will give a prize or provide funding . Before granting the funding , the DOE and the applicants will go through a negotiation process , and the DOE has the option to cancel the negotiations and revoke the selection for any reason during that time . Learn more about these selections , the HFTO , the National Clean Hydrogen Strategy , and the U . S . Roadmap , and how the DOE Hydrogen Program and the Interagency Hydrogen Task Force are supporting the Biden - Harris Administration ' s government - wide strategy to address the climate crisis and provide a clean and equitable energy future for all ( pages available in English ) . ### .
