Biden Harris Administration Announces $750 Million to Support America s Growing Hydrogen Industry as Part of Investing in America Agenda

☷Biden Harris Administration Announces $750 Million to Support America s Growing Hydrogen Industry as Part of Investing in America Agenda

U.S. Department of Energy
| 10| 0
The US Department of Energy ( DOE ) has announced $750 million for 52 projects in 24 states to reduce the cost of clean hydrogen and strengthen America ' s position in the clean hydrogen industry . These projects will focus on advancing electrolysis technologies and improving manufacturing and recycling capabilities for clean hydrogen systems , creating over 1 , 500 new jobs . This announcement aligns with President Biden ' s plan to address the climate crisis , create jobs , and boost America ' s manufacturing competitiveness . The projects are expected to increase US manufacturing capacity for fuel cells and electrolyzers , which will contribute to reducing emissions and powering medium - and heavy - duty trucks . US Secretary of Energy Jennifer M . Granholm emphasized the importance of these projects in propelling America ' s clean hydrogen economy and creating long - lasting benefits for the nation . The announcement will be highlighted by Deputy Secretary of Energy David M . Turk at an event in Michigan , showcasing how President Biden ' s agenda is reinforcing America ' s leadership in clean energy technologies . Representative Rosa DeLauro also commended the funding , stating that it will support the growth of Connecticut ' s clean energy and hydrogen sectors while creating greener jobs and reducing emissions . U . S . Representative Debbie Dingell from Michigan mentioned that this investment will bring in a lot of jobs , money , and help Michigan stay ahead in clean energy innovation . She ' s excited about the potential of green hydrogen technology and its benefits for various industries in the state . She ' s proud to have Nel Hydrogen in Plymouth Township and is committed to making sure Michigan leads the way in fighting climate change and moving towards a net - zero economy . Through initiatives like Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs and tax incentives in the President ' s Inflation Reduction Act , along with ongoing research and development , these investments will help achieve the goal of reducing the cost of producing clean hydrogen . Clean hydrogen is important for reducing emissions in energy - intensive sectors like transportation and industrial processes . It can also support clean electricity expansion and energy storage . By developing clean energy pathways , hydrogen development will strengthen American energy independence and boost manufacturing jobs . These projects are part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law , which provides funding for research and development activities to improve clean hydrogen production and manufacturing technologies . We ' ve chosen some projects to help advance clean hydrogen technologies in a few key areas . These projects will focus on things like making electrolyzer manufacturing more efficient , developing key components for electrolyzers , and creating innovative materials and designs for fuel cells . These efforts are aimed at reducing costs , improving performance , and strengthening the supply chain for clean hydrogen technologies . This investment of $1 . 6 billion ( including recipient cost - sharing ) is expected to create over 1 , 500 new jobs and stimulate economic growth in the industry . You can find more information about the projects we ' ve selected for funding negotiations here . Let ' s build a strong , American - led clean hydrogen industry together!By ramping up domestic fuel cell manufacturing to a capacity of 14 GW per year , these projects will make enough fuel cells for 50 , 000 medium - and heavy - duty trucks annually , which is about 15% of yearly sales . Additionally , by supporting domestic electrolyzer manufacturing , these projects are expected to produce up to 10 GW of electrolyzers per year , adding 1 . 3 million metric tons to our clean hydrogen production capacity . This growth in production can supply clean fuel for around 170 , 000 long haul trucks each year . Furthermore , these projects will lower costs for electrolyzers and fuel cells , making clean hydrogen more viable for heavy - duty transportation , industrial applications , and energy storage . This will help stabilize the electrical grid and reduce the impact of supply and demand fluctuations . These projects will also address technical barriers to cost reduction , ensuring the long - term success of DOE ' s Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs and other commercial - scale deployments . With these investments , the Biden - Harris Administration is securing America ' s leadership in the clean hydrogen industry , ensuring access to top - notch , affordable technologies . Achieving cost reduction goals will create new markets for clean hydrogen , generating more clean energy jobs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions across various sectors of the economy . The Biden - Harris Administration is committed to ensuring that disadvantaged communities benefit from the clean energy transition . As part of President Biden ' s Justice40 Initiative , these projects will support workforce development , energy equity , and initiatives promoting diversity , inclusion , and accessibility in disadvantaged communities . Over $35 million in funding will be allocated to develop and implement Community Benefits Plans , including vocational certificate programs , partnerships with minority - serving institutions , and engagement with community partners for various community - focused activities . Also , these projects aim to reduce costs and speed up the adoption of clean hydrogen , which will ultimately help to decrease harmful emissions . This will be especially beneficial for communities that are already burdened by pollution . It ' s important to note that being selected for award negotiations doesn ' t guarantee funding from the DOE . There will be a negotiation process between the DOE and the applicants , and the DOE may cancel negotiations for any reason . If you want to learn more about these selections , the HFTO , the U . S . National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap , and how the DOE Hydrogen Program and Hydrogen Interagency Task Force are supporting the Biden - Harris Administration ' s strategy for the climate crisis and a clean energy future , you can find more information .
