The Department of Energy ( DOE ) in the US has just announced over $131 million in funding for projects related to electric vehicle ( EV ) batteries and charging systems . They are also supporting a consortium that will focus on key priorities for the next phase of EV commercialization . This consortium will work towards developing advanced technologies to make transportation more environmentally friendly and will engage with universities , national laboratories , and manufacturers in the battery industry . These efforts align with President Biden ' s agenda to invest in America and create a clean energy future . The DOE has selected 27 projects to receive $71 million , which will help lower the cost of EV batteries , improve public transportation , advance EV charging systems , and increase EV driving range . Additionally , the United States Advanced Battery Consortium ( USABC ) will receive $60 million for advanced battery research and development . The consortium is going to focus on researching and developing better EV batteries , ones that use materials that are abundant and available domestically . They will also work on batteries for different types of vehicles and finding more cost - effective ways to recycle batteries . The goal is to meet the growing demand for EV batteries and contribute to a cleaner transportation system . Applicants for funding had to include plans that addressed these objectives . You can learn more about the projects that were selected and other work funded by the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy . It ' s important to note that being selected for negotiations doesn ' t guarantee funding , as DOE can cancel for any reason .
