The U . S . Commerce Secretary , Gina Raimondo , has announced some important appointments at the U . S . AI Safety Institute . Elizabeth Kelly will be the Director of the Institute , while Elham Tabassi will be the Chief Technology Officer . The Institute was created to support the Department of Commerce ' s responsibilities under President Biden ' s Executive Order on AI . Raimondo expressed her confidence in Kelly and Tabassi ' s abilities to navigate the risks associated with AI development and harness its potential . The appointments were praised by Bruce Reed , Deputy Chief of Staff to the President , and Arati Prabhakar , Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy . Elizabeth has been an important member of President Biden ' s team at the White House , and we ' re thrilled that she ' ll continue to work on AI at the Department of Commerce , " said Lael Brainard , National Economic Advisor . "I ' m confident that under Elizabeth Kelly and Elham Tabassi ' s leadership , the U . S . AI Safety Institute will be well equipped to develop the necessary measurement science for safe and reliable AI development , " said Laurie E . Locascio , Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and NIST Director . "The Safety Institute ' s goal to create guidelines , evaluate models , and conduct research is crucial for addressing the risks and opportunities of AI . I ' m excited to work with the talented NIST team and the broader AI community to advance our understanding and promote AI safety . While our first priority is executing the tasks assigned by President Biden ' s executive order , I look forward to building the Institute as a long - term asset for the country and the world , " said Elizabeth Kelly , Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy . "The USAISI will enhance American leadership in responsible AI innovations that improve our lives . It ' s important for us to have a strong understanding of the technology , its capabilities , and limitations . NIST is taking the lead in creating the science , practice , and policy of AI safety and trustworthiness . I ' m thrilled to be part of this amazing team , leading the effort to develop science - based guidelines and standards for AI measurement and policy , " said Elham Tabassi , Chief AI Advisor for NIST . Elizabeth Kelly , as AISI Director , will be in charge of providing executive leadership , management , and oversight of the AI Safety Institute , and collaborating with other AI policy and technical initiatives within the Department , NIST , and the government . Elizabeth Kelly currently serves as Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy at the White House National Economic Council , where she plays a key role in the Administration ' s work on financial regulation and technology policy , including artificial intelligence . Elizabeth played a major role in the domestic aspects of the AI executive order , leading efforts to promote competition , protect privacy , and support workers and consumers . She also helped coordinate the Administration ' s collaboration with allies and partners on AI governance . Elizabeth has a J . D . from Yale Law School , an MSc in Comparative Social Policy from the University of Oxford , and a B . A . from Duke University . As Chief Technology Officer , Elham Tabassi will lead important technical programs of the institute , focused on supporting the development and deployment of safe , secure , and trustworthy AI . She ' s in charge of shaping efforts at NIST and working with the AI community to research , provide guidance , and evaluate AI models , including advanced large language models , to identify and address AI safety risks . Elham Tabassi has been a key figure in NIST ' s AI work and was recognized as one of TIME Magazine ' s 100 Most Influential People in AI in 2023 . As the lead of NIST ' s Trustworthy and Responsible AI program , she led the development of the highly regarded NIST AI Risk Management Framework , a voluntary tool that helps manage risks associated with AI . Tabassi is a Senior Research Scientist and previously served as the Associate Director for Emerging Technologies in NIST ' s Information Technology Laboratory . In that role , she helped shape the direction of research , development , standards , testing , and evaluation in the field of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence .
