Hey , so the U . S . Department of Housing and Urban Development ( HUD ) is urging affordable housing facilities to help states and territories figure out where to send grant funding for expanding high - speed Internet access . They ' re doing this through the BEAD challenge process . HUD Secretary Marcia L . Fudge says that online participation is super important these days , and the BEAD funding will help make sure everyone has affordable and reliable high - speed Internet . The Department of Commerce ' s NTIA is in charge of administering the program , which provides $42 . 45 billion in federal grant funding to bring high - speed Internet to all of America , especially communities that don ' t have it yet . Each state and territory will have their own BEAD challenge process where they ' ll ask for public feedback on which homes , small businesses , and community institutions should be connected through BEAD - funded projects . If someone disagrees with a determination made by the state , they can challenge it . It ' s important to note that the availability of service for multi - dwelling units ( like apartments ) might not be accurately represented on the FCC map , so MDU owners should work with eligible challengers to make sure the data is correct or submit a challenge to the state . The challenge process will vary by state , so eligible challengers should check with their state ' s broadband office for more info . Some states have already started the process , while others will begin soon . The window to submit a challenge is pretty short , usually around 14 - 30 days . If you want more info , you can visit NTIA ' s website or internetforall . gov . And if you ' re interested in learning more about the challenge process , there ' s a webinar recording available .
