Hey everyone! I ' m really excited to be here today as we celebrate the launch of the National Foreign Trade Council ' s Alliance for National Security and Competitiveness . This alliance couldn ' t have come at a better time . As President Biden always says , we ' re at a crucial moment in our national security . The COVID pandemic showed us just how vulnerable our supply chains are , so we ' ve taken steps to make them stronger and more efficient . And with the climate crisis looming , we ' re focused on finding innovative and sustainable solutions . We ' re also dealing with challenges from authoritarian regimes and engaged in a technology competition that will shape our economic future for years to come . It ' s a whole new world out there , and we need new approaches to national security that prioritize our economic strength . At the Department of Commerce , we ' re more committed than ever to protecting our national security . But we can ' t do it alone . The private sector is a crucial partner in all of our efforts , whether it ' s safeguarding the American people , combating climate change , or promoting a fair and secure economic order . Let me give you five examples of how we ' ve already worked together for the greater good . First , when it comes to critical and emerging technologies , we need to leverage the expertise of our thriving private sector to counter the misuse of technology by our adversaries . By leading in these areas , we can ensure a level playing field for companies while also maintaining security . One way we do this is through export controls , which help us regulate the flow of technology to protect our national interests . Developing defensive partnerships is another priority for our national security . We focus on weakening Russia ' s war machine through export control measures and actively support commercial linkages with Ukraine ' s defense industry . US defense companies are providing over $44 billion in security assistance to Ukraine . This partnership has the potential to create a world - class defense industry base in Ukraine for years to come . Increasing the resilience of US supply chains is a national security imperative for the Commerce Department . We need to free ourselves from dangerous dependencies . Environmental security is also a crucial concern . In the past year , we witnessed a record number of billion - dollar weather and climate disaster events . Our National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration , along with other government agencies , international organizations , and the private sector , is leading efforts to provide high - quality forecasts and address the impacts of extreme weather and climate events . We ' re collaborating with insurance and reinsurance companies to improve catastrophe models and incorporate climate information , as well as working with the Electric Power Research Institute to enhance energy sector resilience . Fulfilling the mission of national security – for the Commerce Department and across the Biden - Harris Administration – wouldn’t be possible without strong partnerships between the federal government and the private sector . Today , the Department plays a bigger role in ensuring our national security than ever before . New legislation has allowed us to tackle major security challenges , from chips and semiconductors to boosting America ' s industries and promoting technology innovation . And we want to continue and expand that role in the future . That ' s why I ' m excited to announce that the Department of Commerce will be releasing a National Security Strategy in the next few weeks , which will focus on our top priorities and help us protect and promote our national security . Thanks for giving me the chance to talk with all of you today . I ' m looking forward to our discussion . Tags: Supply Chain , Ukraine .
