Victoria Nuland has informed me that she plans to step down in the next few weeks as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs . In this role , she has embodied President Biden ' s commitment to prioritize diplomacy and reinvigorate America ' s global leadership during a critical time for our country and the world . Toria has had an impressive career spanning over three decades , serving under six Presidents and ten Secretaries of State . She has held various positions within the Department , including political officer , economic officer , spokesperson , chief of staff , deputy assistant secretary , assistant secretary , special envoy , and ambassador . Toria ' s extensive experience has equipped her with vast knowledge on a wide range of issues and regions , as well as an unparalleled ability to utilize American diplomacy to advance our interests and values . What sets Toria apart is her unwavering dedication to fighting for freedom , democracy , human rights , and America ' s ability to inspire and promote these values globally . These principles have driven her since we first met more than 30 years ago and have been evident in her work as Under Secretary and Acting Deputy Secretary of State . Throughout her tenure , Toria has led the Department in addressing complex crises , expanding and strengthening alliances , and particularly , playing a pivotal role in Ukraine . Her efforts in confronting Putin ' s invasion of Ukraine , rallying a global coalition against him , and assisting Ukraine in its path towards sovereignty have left a lasting impact . Toria ' s diplomatic skills are just one aspect to admire about her . She is never afraid to speak her mind , which has benefited both me and our foreign policy . She consistently supports and invests in our diplomats , mentoring them and ensuring they receive the support they deserve . She brings light to even the darkest moments , provides laughter when it is needed most , and always has your back . President Biden and I have appointed John Bass , our Under Secretary for Management , to serve as Acting Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs until Toria ' s replacement is confirmed . We are incredibly grateful for Toria ' s service and the indelible mark she has made on our institution and the world .
