In a more laid - back setting at Joint Base Myer - Henderson Hall , Virginia , Robin Hoeflein was promoted to Army brigadier general . With her husband by her side and their daughters watching , she officially joined the top tier of Army officers . Only a small percentage of officers in the Army reach the rank of general , highlighting Hoeflein ' s exceptional abilities and potential . This promotion ceremony took place a day before the start of Women’s History Month , paying tribute to trailblazing female generals like Anna Mae Hays and Elizabeth Hoisington . Hoeflein originally joined the military for the education benefits in 1989 , but stayed for the fulfilling work and sense of camaraderie . Since becoming a second lieutenant in 1998 , she has held various leadership positions and even deployed to Iraq in 2005 . Before her current assignment , she was the chief of staff of the 40th Infantry Division , California Army Guard — which was the first Army infantry division led by a woman , Maj . Gen . Laura Yeager . Hoeflein deployed to Kuwait with the division in July and returned in January to take on her current position . She said she was inspired by the people she worked with in each of her roles . Hoeflein mentioned that her favorite part of serving is working with talented and dedicated service members who make significant contributions and sacrifices for the country every day . She recalled a particular moment in 2020 when she led over 2 , 100 Soldiers and Airmen during COVID and wildfire response missions . She credited their professionalism and dedication for the success of the operation . Hoeflein expressed gratitude for the support , guidance , and mentorship she received from colleagues , which helped her achieve the rank of brigadier general . She also thanked her husband and children for their unwavering support throughout her career . Looking forward to her new role , Hoeflein expressed eagerness and gratitude for the opportunity .
