At a modeling fair at the Camp Zama Community Club in Japan on March 2 , 2024 , community members had the chance to speak with a talent and model agency . Approximately 200 people attended the event , which also marked the beginning of the Army Emergency Relief campaign for the year . A young community member even got her picture taken by the agency . The event aimed to raise awareness about AER , a nonprofit that supports Soldiers and their families . The modeling fair was a unique way to draw attention to the program , as explained by Brad Morgan , the AER officer at Camp Zama’s Army Community Service . Command Sgt . Maj . David A . Rio , the senior enlisted leader for U . S . Army Garrison Japan , addressed the crowd and participated in a cake - cutting ceremony to officially start the campaign . AER has been providing assistance to Soldiers and their families for over 80 years , offering grants , loans , and scholarships . Last year , the ACS team at Camp Zama distributed nearly $60 , 000 in aid to help 30 community members . Rio emphasized the importance of the program in supporting the Camp Zama community . Around 200 people showed up to the “Strike a Pose for AER” event , which helped raise awareness for the campaign . The aid mainly supports Soldiers and their families who need to travel to the United States in emergency situations like a family member falling ill or passing away . Morgan mentioned that they assist with things like hotel rooms , rental cars , and food expenses , in addition to providing zero - interest loans or grants for financial emergencies like car repairs or medical bills . AER also offers $1 , 000 grants for Soldiers transitioning to civilian employment through the Career Skills Program . Donations are crucial for AER , as they receive no federal funding and rely on contributions from active - duty and retired Soldiers , as well as other citizens and corporations . The current fundraising campaign has been extended until June 14 , and those interested in donating can reach out to their unit AER coordinator or ACS staff . Your donation could make a difference for someone in need in the community .
