Over 150 Airmen from the Wisconsin Air National Guard ' s 115th Fighter Wing recently finished the Combat Archer exercise at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida . This exercise marked the first training deployment for the unit ' s F - 35A Lightning II aircraft , giving pilots and maintenance personnel valuable experience in handling and firing live air - to - air munitions . Captain Alexander Abbott , the project officer for the exercise , explained that Combat Archer evaluates a unit ' s ability to carry out live fire missions and provides important feedback for improvement . Tech . Sgt . Patrick Joyce , a weapons expeditor , noted the benefits of training outside their usual base in Truax Field , as it allows them to adapt quickly and learn valuable procedures for loading live munitions . The exercise also gave F - 35 pilots from Madison the chance to practice departure techniques used in high threat environments , focusing on high - speed takeoffs to ensure safe ejection altitudes and minimize ground - to - air threats . Lt . Col . Michael Koob , commander of the 176th Fighter Squadron , emphasized the importance of such training exercises , comparing them to actual overseas deployments .
