The Department of Labor finished checking out 15 mines in January 2024 that have a history of breaking health and safety rules . They found 63 serious violations and one major failure . The inspections were done as a response to a deadly explosion in West Virginia in 2010 . Since 2023 , these types of inspections have found almost 3 , 000 violations , including 827 major ones . The inspections are meant to focus on mines that have a bad track record and are at risk for accidents . In January , they found 188 violations , with 63 being serious and one being a major failure . The inspections took place in ten different states . The Department of Labor says these inspections are necessary to protect miners and prevent accidents . In 2023 , MSHA put out a safety alert about highwall rock and keeps reminding operators to train miners on spotting highwall hazards , examine highwalls , and limit highwall height . They also found some issues with a haul truck that could put miners at risk if the steering or dump brakes failed , as well as poor parking procedures for equipment . MSHA has now made it a rule for mine operators to have safety programs for mobile equipment to prevent accidents . There were also other violations like messy conditions , fire risks , and electrical dangers that could lead to slips , trips , falls , smoke inhalation , and burns for miners . Find out more about MSHA .
