The US Department of Housing and Urban Development ( HUD ) , the Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ) , and the Department of Health and Human Services ( HHS ) have announced two agreements to strengthen their efforts in preventing lead poisoning . These agreements support their goals of reducing lead exposures , especially in underserved communities , and promoting environmental justice . One agreement updates a previous agreement between EPA and HUD to coordinate enforcement efforts addressing lead - based paint hazards in housing . The second agreement launches a pilot program in Region 3 to share information about communities with high lead levels , with the aim of expanding this effort nationwide . HUD is excited to collaborate with EPA and CDC on this pilot program , which could lead to a better national framework for addressing lead exposures . HUD is interested in using shared data to improve its engagement with state and local lead hazard control programs , healthy homes programs , and housing rehabilitation programs to better target funding , conduct special projects , and collaborate . The three agencies involved will work together to identify and assist communities at risk of lead exposure . The goal is to share information on lead exposure more effectively to reduce negative health impacts in the region . It is important to ensure all children grow up without the burden of lead poisoning , and efforts are being made to end lead poisoning and its effects . Lead poisoning affects over 1 million children in the US and can cause various health issues . Lead paint exposure is a common cause of elevated blood lead levels in children . There are millions of homes in the US with lead paint hazards , particularly in low - income households . Information on lead paint compliance and enforcement can be found on the EPA’s website , and resources for addressing housing health hazards , including lead , can be found on HUD’s website . Efforts are being made to reduce lead exposure and protect children through various federal initiatives .
