☷Ukraine Delegation Visits Washington National Guard Leaders

Brig . Gen . Kenneth Borchers , the director of the Joint Staff in the Washington National Guard , shook hands with Ruslan Kravchenko , the head of the Kyiv Regional State Administration , during a visit to Camp Murray , Washington on March 15 , 2024 . The purpose of the visit was to strengthen the friendship that was established when the 81st Stryker Brigade Combat Team deployed to Ukraine in 2021 to support the Joint Multinational Training Group - Ukraine mission . A delegation from Ukraine expressed their gratitude to the Washington National Guard for their support , particularly during the Ukrainian military ' s deployment . The visit also involved signing agreements between Kyiv Oblast and Washington state , as well as establishing a Sister Cities relationship between Tacoma and Brovary , Ukraine . The 81st SBCT played a significant role in training and assisting the Ukrainian armed forces , working alongside NATO allies and partners . They provided mentoring and guidance at the Combat Training Center near Yavoriv , adopting a "train - the - trainer" approach to enable the Ukrainians to lead their own training . When the Guard members returned home , Russian forces began their attack on Ukraine in February 2022 . The Ukrainian guests expressed their appreciation for the help provided by the Washington National Guard , including troubleshooting and setting up equipment via telephone . The California National Guard has been working closely with the Ukraine military and Ukraine National Guard since 1993 through the National Guard State Partnership Program . This program , which came from an American suggestion to NATO , has multiple goals . It aims to enhance the ability of partner nations to work with NATO forces , promote transparency in military matters , and most importantly , educate them on how a democratic military operates .
