☷MEDCoE Soldiers volunteer teach important skills to area scouts

Staff Sgt . Christopher Davenport , a Soldier from the U . S . Army Medical Center of Excellence , was showing a group of scouts how to splint a broken arm at a Campout in San Antonio on March 2 , 2024 . Other Soldiers from the Medical Center of Excellence , like Master Sgt . Walter Hickman III , Sgt . 1st Class Matthew Sawyer , and Maj . Joe Samudio , answered questions during a Stop the Bleed demonstration . Staff Sgt . Anthony Stevens taught two scouts how to do CPR , and Soldiers also showed scouts how to carry a stretcher and treat burns . Overall , more than 70 Soldiers volunteered to teach skills to over 600 scouts during the Campout , helping them earn merit badges and be prepared for emergencies . Cpt . Lamanda Jackson , from the Medical Center of Excellence Recruiting Task Force , saw the event as a chance to showcase the different career opportunities in Army Medicine and promote leadership and community collaboration . Army North , the Army Medical Recruiting Battalion in San Antonio , and the Institute of Surgical Research , along with other local commands , joined in on the day ' s activities . There were 17 interactive stations where area Soldiers gave hands - on training and showcased what it ' s like to work as an Army combat medic , veterinarian , public health officer , and burn specialist . Not only Soldiers , but also civil service employees from the commands volunteered at the event , many of whom have children in the local scouting program . Sgt . 1st Class John Bell , part of the MEDCoE Recruiting Task Force , coordinated with the local scout council to ensure the event ran smoothly and provided a chance for Soldiers to give back to the community . Bell , a combat medic and former instructor , values the opportunity to share life - saving skills and volunteer in the community . He believes events like this not only aid in recruiting efforts but also strengthen community relations . Boy Scouts who took part in the stations also completed requirements for various merit badges .
