☷U S Department of Education Launches Government Coordinating Council to Strengthen Cybersecurity in Schools

Today , the U . S . Department of Education , along with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency , launched a new council called the Government Coordinating Council for the Education Facilities Subsector . This is a big step in the effort to improve cybersecurity in K - 12 schools . The council represents an unprecedented collaboration between federal , state , tribal , and local governments to protect schools from cyber threats . The Education Facilities Subsector is part of the Government Facilities Sector , which is one of the critical infrastructure sectors . In recent years , cybersecurity in schools has become more complex , with ransomware attacks and data breaches affecting districts nationwide . The GCC was formed to address these challenges and promote a more secure digital infrastructure for K - 12 education through dialogue and best practices . U . S . Deputy Secretary of Education Cindy Marten emphasized the significance of this initiative in protecting our schools . This effort builds on the Department ' s partnership with CISA and other federal agencies . The launch of the GCC follows the "Back to School Safely" K - 12 Cybersecurity Summit hosted by First Lady Jill Biden , highlighting the whole - of - government approach to addressing cyber incidents in schools . CISA Director Jen Easterly stressed the importance of protecting schools from cyber threats and expressed excitement about the launch of the Education Facilities Subsector GCC . The inaugural meeting of the council brought together various educational stakeholders to discuss objectives and strategic direction . The GCC is a big step forward in making sure our National Cybersecurity Strategy is working . It ' s gonna make things safer and more secure for students , teachers , and communities all over the country .
