A painting company in Ohio had to pay a hefty fine of $30 , 000 for employing 17 - year - old teens to paint houses . The investigation by the Wage and Hour Division also resulted in an additional $38 , 000 in civil money penalties . Neubert Painting Inc . , based in Brook Park , Ohio , and its owner John Neubert were found to have violated child labor laws by hiring two minors to paint homes during the summers of 2021 and 2022 . These minors were even made to work on roofs , which is a hazardous job that is not allowed for individuals under the age of 18 . In addition to the penalties , the company was also found to have inaccurate payroll records . The District Director of the Wage and Hour Division in Columbus , Ohio , Matthew Utley , emphasized the importance of employers being aware of the restrictions for workers under 18 and the dangers associated with having children work on roofs . It is worth noting that starting from January 2024 , employers can be fined up to $15 , 629 for each child labor law violation . In February 2023 , an Interagency Task Force was established to combat child labor exploitation , demonstrating the government ' s commitment to protecting children in the workplace . In the fiscal year 2023 , over $8 million in penalties were assessed on employers for child labor violations . The Wage and Hour Division provides information on child labor regulations and dangerous jobs prohibited for workers under 18 .
