President Biden ' s plan to invest in America is focusing on projects that will make battery recycling more affordable for consumers , ultimately making electric vehicles more accessible and strengthening our domestic supply chains . The U . S . Department of Energy has announced $62 million for 17 projects funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law , aimed at increasing consumer participation in battery recycling and improving the economics of the process . These investments are crucial as the demand for electric vehicles and energy storage is expected to increase significantly in the coming years . By recycling used batteries , we can reduce the need for new materials and support the administration ' s goal of having electric vehicles make up half of all vehicle sales in the U . S . by 2030 . Energy Secretary Jennifer M . Granholm emphasized the importance of building a sustainable battery supply chain to lower costs for consumers and boost our manufacturing competitiveness . The projects selected will focus on expanding the collection of end - of - life consumer electronics for recycling and improving the economics of the recycling process through innovative approaches , ultimately contributing to the growth and security of America ' s battery supply chain . We ' re setting up programs to collect batteries from consumer electronics . We ' re giving funding to six projects that will help states and local governments improve battery collection , recycling , and reprocessing . These projects include drop - off programs and facilities for storing and sorting batteries . The funding , which amounts to $7 . 2 million , will be administered by DOE ' s Vehicle Technologies Office ( VTO ) and Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains ( MESC ) . It supports the goals outlined in the Federal Consortium for Advanced Batteries ' National Blueprint for Lithium Batteries . This funding is part of our efforts to strengthen the domestic battery supply chain , and we ' ve already invested over $74 million in advancing EV battery recycling and second - life applications . We ' re also looking to boost the collection of used consumer batteries at retailers , and we ' re seeking projects led by retailers to expand collection efforts . Applications are due on April 9 , 2024 . Additionally , we ' ve announced a prize competition focused on increasing the production and use of critical materials recovered from electronic scrap , with up to $4 million in awards available . You can find more information about this prize opportunity . For details on the projects selected for award negotiation , check here , and to learn more about VTO and MESC , visit their websites . It ' s important to note that selection for award negotiations doesn ' t guarantee funding , as DOE and the applicants will go through a negotiation process , and DOE may cancel award negotiations for any reason .
