Tyshawn Kellogg , a 29 - year - old resident of South Bend , got sentenced by Judge Damon R . Leichty of the U . S . District Court . He pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm . U . S . Attorney Clifford D . Johnson announced that Kellogg received a sentence of 87 months in prison , followed by two years of supervised release . In January 2023 , Kellogg led police officers on a high - speed chase that ended when he crashed his car into a fence . After abandoning the vehicle , he left behind various illegal substances , including a handgun , heroin , fentanyl , and cocaine . Kellogg had previous felony convictions , which prohibited him from having the firearm in this situation . The investigation of this case involved the Bureau of Alcohol , Tobacco , Firearms and Explosives , along with assistance from the South Bend Police Department , Indiana State Police , and St . Joseph County Prosecuting Attorney ' s Office . Assistant U . S . Attorney Katelan McKenzie Doyle prosecuted the case . This incident is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods ( PSN ) , an initiative that aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence in communities . Launched on May 26 , 2021 , the Department implemented a violent crime reduction strategy for PSN , focusing on building trust , supporting community organizations , setting enforcement priorities , and measuring outcomes .
