Firefighters tried out location tracking technology during a training exercise . Every second is crucial in emergency situations , and being able to accurately locate first responders in buildings can make a big difference . The First Responder Smart Tracking Challenge ( FRST ) , led by Indiana University and funded by NIST , has successfully wrapped up its final phase , aiming to improve tracking technology for first responders . Six teams competed to develop 3D tracking technology to enhance emergency response operations . The competition started in March 2022 and included various challenging scenarios at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center in Indiana . The winning teams , Ascent Integrated Tech and AdaptiTrace , received $507 , 500 each for their innovative solutions . The Smart Firefighting collective by Ascent uses a platform that tracks firefighters in 3D space within buildings by combining localization and biometric monitoring . Sensors on first responders ' equipment stream important data like thermal imaging , environmental conditions , and location information , while also monitoring carbon dioxide levels , humidity , and airborne metal oxide . The goal is to create a comprehensive product suite with additional features like biometric data and environmental context . AdaptiTrace ' s system , which can be attached to first responders ' equipment , creates a 3D map using multiple sensors and robotics as responders move through a building . Judges evaluated the winning teams based on scalability , ruggedization , affordability , and usability . NIST is collaborating with Indiana University to continue working with these teams and the location - based services community to improve their products and bring them to market . The FRST Challenge not only showcases the technical abilities of these technologies but also establishes a model for addressing challenges faced by first responders . The hope is to see these innovative solutions integrated into real - world emergency response operations to enhance the safety and efficiency of first responders .
