Shawn Wooden , a 41 - year - old from Washington , has been sentenced to 92 months in prison for his involvement in a drug trafficking group known as the "MLK Crew" in Southeast Washington . The announcement was made by U . S . Attorney Matthew M . Graves , FBI Special Agent in Charge Geist , and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department ( MPD ) . Wooden , also known as "Black , " pleaded guilty on September 12 , 2023 , to possessing a firearm illegally after being convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for over a year . Along with his prison sentence , Wooden was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release by U . S . District Court Judge Dabney L . Friedrich . Wooden was one of 17 defendants indicted in connection with the "MLK Crew , " with all 16 defendants who have been sentenced receiving prison terms ranging from 24 to 114 months . The investigation into the group was initiated after numerous complaints from citizens about drug trafficking and violence in the area . The MPD and FBI conducted surveillance , obtained search warrants , and made controlled drug purchases during the investigation , which revealed that MLK Crew members openly sold drugs and took over local businesses . The investigation also resulted in the seizure of firearms and various narcotics . Wooden was found to have maintained a stash house within MLK Crew territory , where he stored firearms and large quantities of drugs under a different individual ' s name . There were photos and videos that showed Wooden and his buddies cooking crack and packaging drugs in the apartment . When the stash house was searched , they found two guns , along with fentanyl and crack cocaine . DNA analysis confirmed that Wooden ' s DNA was on one of the firearms , which was a ghost gun . Wooden , who had previous felony convictions and was on supervised release , isn ' t allowed to have guns . The MLK Crew ' s drug trafficking led to a lot of violence in the area , including assaults , shootings , robberies , and even the murder of a six - year - old girl . After months of investigation , the police arrested 11 people and seized drugs , firearms , and cash . Wooden and six others were charged later and arrested . This investigation was part of a bigger effort to bring down high - level drug traffickers and criminal organizations . The FBI and MPD worked together to target violent street crews in DC . They received help from other agencies like the DEA , Park Police , and ATF . The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U . S . Attorneys .
